3 Essential Rules For Properly Taking Care of Hair Extensions

Taking proper care of hair extensions is essential if you want them to last and stay beautifully put. No matter what type of hair extensions you have, you have to take care of them to avoid mattes, tangles, or them falling out. Hair extensions are made of real human hair, however, they lack the oils on your scalp, which is one of the most protective elements your hair has.

Make sure to follow these 3 essential rules to properly take care of your hair extensions. Your hair will thank you later!

Rule #1: Be conscious of your surroundings and possible threats to your hair

You might not realize this, but your everyday environment has a huge impact on your hair. Things such as wind, sun, even chlorine & salt can majorly affect your hair. The sun especially can damage your extensions because since it’s human hair, it is still susceptible to UV/A and UV/B exposure. When UV/A and UV/B hit your hair, your extensions can dry out and even break down fusion bonds.

So you’re probably wondering what you can do to avoid this and keep your hair healthy. It’s recommended to minimize your sun exposure. If you spend a day at the beach or a day at the pool, make sure to bring an umbrella or a hat. Also, make sure to bring some leave-in conditioner and apply it to your hair throughout the day. The leave-in conditioner will not only protect your hair from the sun but if you choose to go in the ocean or pool it will protect your hair from salt and chlorine as well.

Rule #2: Make sure to have a morning and evening hair ritual

The morning and evening are two times throughout the day that your extensions are most susceptible to damage. While you’re sleeping, the tossing and turning and friction from your pillowcase can raise your cuticle and cause tangling. In the morning, after your shower, your hair is vulnerable because it is wet. Drying with a towel, excessive styling, and improper washing techniques can lead to a lot of damage to your extensions.

Here’s what you can do.

  • Make sure to thoroughly and gently brush your hair before going to bed and also before your showers.
  • Consider purchasing a silk pillowcase as the silk won’t tug on your hair at night.
  • Make sure to use a shampoo and conditioner that your Show Salons stylist recommends. Most products found in drug stores are damaging to hair and extensions.
  • When washing your hair, don’t roughly wash it. Gently, massage and work the shampoo and conditioner through your hair.

Rule #3: Don’t go crazy with the blow dryer

While blow dryers are very convenient, they are not ideal when trying to keep healthy hair. The heat from the blow dryer will mess up the cuticles causing them to flake or not sit flat. Let your hair and extensions air dry as this will avoid damage to your cuticles.

If you must blow-dry, use a heat protectant spray and set your blow dryer to the coolest setting. Also, if you want to style your hair with a hair straightener or curling iron, make sure your hair is 100% dry before you start and once again use a heat protectant spray.
