How Can I Train My Hair To Be Less Greasy?

Are you constantly battling with your greasy hair? If you feel like you can never avoid grease, don’t give up! Read through this guide for tips and tricks on how to train your hair to be less greasy. While it might sound too good to be true, you can totally pull this off with some effort!

Shampoo Less

If you have greasy hair, you might actually be making it worse or at least not helping the situation by washing your hair too often. The more you wash your hair, the greasier it will be. This is because shampoo strips our hair of its natural oils which encourages it to produce more oil. So, by shampooing too often you are actually training it to be more greasy rather than less. We recommend cutting down your shampooing to 2-3x a week.

Use Clarifying Shampoo

If you reduce the number of times you wash your hair per week, when it is time to wash you are probably ready for a thorough cleaning. A clarifying shampoo will be your best bet! It will wash and get rid of all the build-up and anything else clinging to your hair. Clarifying shampoos are powerful, so don’t overuse them!

If you choose to use a more traditional shampoo, try to choose a product that won’t weigh your hair down. Avoid shampoos that contain proteins, oils, or silicon, and choose one that is translucent rather than creamy. Dry shampoo is great to use too! Dry shampoo will allow you to put off washing your hair a bit longer.

Don’t Stop Conditioning

Some people think that conditioning your hair makes it more greasy, which is not true! Conditioning is important when training your hair to be less greasy. Choose a conditioner that is very moisturizing. This moisture will tell your scalp that your hair has enough so that it doesn’t need to produce as much oil.

Don’t Wash Your Hair in Hot Water

I know we all love a nice hot shower, however, the hot water is not good for your hair. Hot water dries out hair which encourages it to produce more oil. Start your shower with warm water to cleanse and open your cuticles, then switch to colder water at the end of your shower to close back up your cuticles.

Evaluate Your Daily Style Routine

If your efforts to make your hair less greasy aren’t working there are a few styling tricks you can use. Use a blow dryer to dry out some of the oil, however, be careful not to use too much heat because it can damage your hair.

If you straighten your hair every day, it’s definitely time to stop. The flatter your hair is on your head, the more oil it will grab from your scalp.

There are also tons of hairstyles that are great for the days that your hair is feeling a little too greasy but you’re not ready to wash yet. Try some new styles that you’re not used to! You might find one you really love that will help you during this hair training process.
