The Different Types of Hair Extensions

Hair extensions make the possibilities of enhancing your hair fun and appealing, whether it’s by adding more length, creating a fuller look, or creating an entirely new hairstyle. You can choose synthetic extensions or human hair extensions, depending on your hair goals or preference. From clip-ins to wigs, hair extensions are a great option for improving what’s already on your head. Each hair extension offers something different, with specific benefits and drawbacks. Here’s a look at the different types of hair extensions that you should know about.

Clip-in Hair Extensions

Clip-in extensions are also called clip-in wefts and are characteristic of a strand of contoured pieces of hair that are held together at the base by fabric or silicone. Attached to the base are ready-to-use clips that snap to open and close and takes a maximum of 15 minutes to attach. The extensions are clipped to the natural hair, typically creating a fuller, longer body of hair. The extensions are easily and quickly removed and reattached as desired without any damage to your natural hair. Each clip snaps open and closes with ease. They can be washed every 15-20 wears and human hair clip-ins can be styled as desired. Expect 3 to 6 months use with proper care and maintenance.

Tape-In Hair Extensions

Tape in hair extensions are pre-taped hairpieces, which are taped/glued together on either side of your natural hair. Tape-ins are typically aligned with the roots of your natural hair and applied with a heated tool. Removal usually involves the use of a glue remover that can damage your natural hair.  Application of tape-in extension can last for 40 minutes to 1 hour. Special shampoo, conditioner, and styling products are necessary to maintain the adhesive which will prevent the hair from slipping. These extensions can last 4 to 8 weeks.

Sew-In Hair Extensions/Weave

Weave is applied by first braiding your natural hair into cornrows of a certain style after which a threaded needle is used to sew the wefts of weave onto the cornrow. The weave application process tends to take several hours to complete. It’s not ideal for people with thin hair because of the stress that the tight application places on the scalp. Wig can serve as a sew-ins as well. Maintain with protein products to protect the natural hair from damage. It’s best to keep the sew-in for only 6 to 8 weeks.

Fusion & Pre-Bonded Hair Extensions

Fusion hair extensions, also called bonding or pre-bonded are fused to your natural hair with an adhesive that is typically applied using a device that resembles a hot glue gun. This application can take roughly 3 to 4 hours to complete. It places a lot of stress on your natural hair because the fusion hair is glued to individual strands of your natural hair. Pre-bonded hair extensions can also be applied using a heat clamp to melt the glue to your natural hair. Typically, the extensions need re-positioning every 2 to 4 months b as the natural hair grows.

Microlink Hair Extensions

Microlink hair extensions are also called micro bead hair extensions and micro loop hair extensions. During application, tiny wefts of hair are attached to small sections of the natural hair using a small silicone-lined bead, which is secured with a special tool to hold the hair in position. Application of this hair can take roughly 2 to 4 hours to complete and it can last for 4 months.

Wigs & Hair Pieces

There are different types of wigs and hairpieces available and applied to your hair is done topically. There are full wigs, half wigs, and lace front wigs. Wigs generally cover the entire head and are worn for reasons that may include balding, hair loss, balding, or for a change of hairstyle.

Hairpieces on the other hand can be in the shape of a bun, hair ties, or ponytail, which can be placed on top of your natural hair. They can be used to address a particular hair problem in a specific area of the head, like balding the center, or to create a brand new hairstyle, like an afro puff. If wigs are made of human hair, they can last for a year, while synthetics may last for a month.
