The Different Types of Hairbrushes and How to Use Them

Brushing your hair is a part of your daily routine that probably feels like second nature by now. If you find yourself having one too many bad hair days a week, your brush may be to blame! Knowing what brush your hair needs and how to use the brush to get the best results is a game-changer.

Detangling Brush

Detangling brushes are meant to do exactly what the name suggests; detangle your hair. Hair is the most fragile and prone to breakage when it’s wet. For most people, wet hair is also the most tangled hair. Use a detangling brush when your hair is wet to get rid of knots without damaging your hair. For thick hair, using a detangling spray at the same time can be helpful. Detangling brushes are made of thick synthetic bristles that are far enough apart to allow your hair wet hair to move through the brush.

Round Brush

Round brushes come with a bit of a learning curve, but once you nail it, you’ll have salon-quality hair at home! Round brushes should be used in conjunction with a blow dryer. Thermal round brushes have synthetic bristles that help dry your hair more efficiently, but natural hair round brushes work fine too. For a straight hair effect, use a large round brush and start at the root. Work down with the brush as your dry your hair. To get a wavy or curly look, use a smaller barrel-round brush and wrap your hair around it as you dry your hair.

Boar Brush

Boar brushes are brushes that contain boar bristles. Boar bristles are great at distributing your hair natural oils to enhance your natural texture. Straight, curly, and wavy hair can all look great using a boar brush. These brushes have detangling abilities, but it’s best to stick to a true detangling brush when you’re working through wet hair.

Mixed Bristle Brush

A mixed bristle brush is a combination of a boar brush and a synthetic detangling brush. You get the detangling benefits of a synthetic brush with the oil distribution benefits of a boar brush. A mixed bristle brush is ideal for people with medium to thick hair of any texture. If you need to brush your hair in the middle of the day and don’t want to worry about tangles or frizz after, a mixed bristle brush is the way to go!
